Parts Description Cheat Sheet

In internal family systems (IFS) and similar modalities, we are often asked to “describe” parts or internal experiences. Describing our experiences is a basic tool of mindfulness. It is a powerful way to identify them for ourselves, express them to others, and recognize the separateness between us and our experiences. However, this is not a skill that comes easily to all.

Parts can be described in myriad ways. We can identify their roles, notice their behaviors, or notice their ages. We can describe them visually, somatically, tactilely, or even auditorily.

In deeper moments of emotional connection, finding words can be difficult. It’s my hope that this “cheat sheet” of descriptor words can help inspire the vocabulary to express our parts. Please feel free to use this for yourself or share it with others.
